The shape of city began to change, now Kazan not only the centre of province, but "East capital", one of the biggest cities of Russia.

In 70s of 18 century Kazan again appeared in the epicentre of tragical events and big destructions: the bloody chariot of country war under the leadership of Emelyan Pugachev, newly presented as "emperor Peter III" swept here. According to Ekaterina II who visited city in 1767, Kazan "the first in Russia after Moscow..., capital of the big empire".

In 18 century Kazan got one more important function: educational. In 1759 the first provincial grammar school of Russia at the Moscow university was opened, among its graduates we know poet G.Derzhavin, writer S.Aksakov, ingenious mathematician N.Lobachevsky and many many others.
